The S/S-PLUS system for graphics and data analysis has a particularly comprehensive implementation of trellis display. The system starts its life as S, from Bell Labs. It moves to MathSoft as the basis of the commercially available S-PLUS

Software for trellis display was designed by Rick Becker, Bill Cleveland, and Ming Shyu of Bell Labs and was implemented in the S in 1995. Stephen Kaluzny of MathSoft did the S-PLUS implementation from the S code.

In 1997, as part of the new GUI for S-PLUS, Sue Ranney of MathSoft designed a widgeted version of trellis display as a fundamental part of the GUI. One of the many advances of the new version was direct manipulation of graphical elements such as plotting characters, titles, and so forth. In other words, a highly interactive version of trellis software now exists.

Linda Clark at Bell Labs and Stephen Kaluzny at MathSoft now manage the core trellis code.

Questions about the trellis software in S/S-PLUS can be submitted to the S-PLUS list server or to MathSoft technical support.
