About

I'm a Consulting Member of Technical Staff in the Computing and Software Principles Research department in the Enabling Computing Technology research domain of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs.

My research and development contributions have included technologies for securing networks and network devices, novel approaches to malware detection and mitigation, innovations in network routing protocols and routing protocol security, web-based identity management, aapproaches to extensible network/device features and management using XML-based protocols and representations, techniques for the optimal design of MPLS primary and fast restoration paths, functional language interfaces to database management systems, and techniques for the computer simulation and modeling of enzyme mechanics and biochemical processes.

I am the creator and evangelist for the Fireworks firewall kernel modules, embedded system components, and toolkit which have been incorporated into a number of AT&T, Lucent, and Alcatel-Lucent products. Fireworks implements the zone-based security policy design used by the award-winning Alcatel-Lucent VPN Firewall and is described in this paper: Fireworks - Achieving Low Cost of Ownership for an Embeddable Firewall Component

I have patents in the areas of XML representations and protocols for extensible device management, technologies for securing 3G (GPRS) UMTS networks, techniques for persistent address mappings for dynamically assigned network address translation, coordination of the tunneled and untunneled IP sessions in a multi-tier network, and innovations in malware detection.

I was a founding member of the Alcatel-Lucent VPN Firewall product team and have participated in the development of a varity of network devices, including the AT&T Secure SmartHUB, the PacketStar Access Router, the PathStar Access Server (an advanced voice/data switch), the AT&T StarLAN Network Operating System(NOS), the AT&T PassageWay collaborative communications products, the PenPoint-based AT&T Legend PhoneWriter, and SNMP network management agents and managers for a variety of devices and computing platforms.

I work closely with several Alcatel-Lucent product units and directly with our 3G wireless customers to create new product features and security solution innovations.
